I visited this year’s exhibit which felt very crowded! There was a focus on smaller pieces of work in some of the galleries which was quite fun casting your eye over so many individual works all at once! But the larger sculptures really were crammed into one room which felt a little like a junk yard!
There were some excellent pieces especially the 'prints' room whilst there was also some utter rubbish! A real eclectic mix! I especially liked the humpback whaleII etching by marion Macaphee an edition of 20 at £650 each which is almost affordable if your not skint like me! Cartmel in February and Windermere, an etching by Norman Ackroyd RA edition of 90 and on sale for £950 was a particularly popular print with around 35 red stickers to its name (marking it as a sale). And I can see why, as this beautiful etching had a real feel of misty winter mornings in the country side - a really peaceful and wild scene!
In fact it became a brilliant game to guess the price of the pieces some other favourites of mine from the fascinating print selection of the exhibition were:
Safety Last, a series of distorted colour images scratched into, making a beautiful if not slightly sinister feeling of memory and nostalgia - something that always captures my eye. This series of 8 etchings by Catherine Yates were priced at a whopping £9,000 pounds!
The Long View Reflected, drypoint by Chris Orr RA edition of 20 at £1,650 each were a popular sale as it showed a busy black and white London skyline full of lines and shapes the scene delights the eye with its complexity. It reminded me of the work my boyfriend, Michael Hitchens does except his London sky line plays on vibrant colours and sharp bold edges to bring the scene smashing out of the page .. take a look
