Improvers, Entertainers, Shockers and Makers - A guide to modern culture by Charles Leadbeater
What an interesting talk by Charles Leadbeater - there is loads of content below from the Corner House, which I have put links into so i won't say much!
Charles highlighted that there used to be 3 ways to make money from culture which was to improve (high culture) to entertain (soap culture) or to Shock (the Tracy Emins of this world), but now the web has brought us a 4th; To make (social media/digital creation). The lecture was pretty much structured around this and was a great incite into the situation of culture today.
I also found his point of view particularly apt that the 20 something year olds of today, now have a dilema. Having being taught in a very linear fashion - pushed through school to achieve set grades and apply for straight forward jobs based on these grades, we now live in a world where learning how to be an entrepreneur and to work within networks creatively, is now invaluable and that this needs to be incorporated into education as a new way of learning.
