Storytelling - a Cornerhouse Workshop


Katie Moffat led this unique workshop as part of the Cornerhouse digital skills workshop series here are my notes (admittedly not in a story telling format but they provide a quick reference of story telling advice)!

General Story Telling Tips
Find Out Why you are telling the story?
What is it about the Story that Interests You?
Smaller less huge stories are often more engaging
Test Out stories
Listen and read more stories get inspiration
Practice!

Construct a Story 
Have a middle and an end in mind when you start the story - build twists so ending is not clear
Unpredicatbility
Interesting charcters
conflict /twist
Reflection - events that teach us about the world we are in
Tell your story and then be able to take away what it means - reflection 
Work towards an end
 Most stories are about people - they are at the core -
strong humour elements are often good
Be curious ask questions
dont be too rigid with what the story has to be - go with the flow

 The Buisiness of story telling   
Get your communities to to share their stories
A company is not faceless - its all about the people  - the companies people and their customers
Customers want to see what's behind the organisation - let them in on the fun
If you tell a story really well you can build passion with your customers - show them behindthe scenes - tell them lots of stories -staff having fun
Create little stories with your staff so you can get a sense of the people behind the company
Snippets - use Audioclips - events - interview
Facebook - blog
Build a sense of what the companies all about - 'behind the marketing' is the marketing!
People do business through people not business

Building Momentum for your Customers 
 create excitment e.g. for an event by drip feeding info then finally - the Big Reveal!
If you create an exciting enough story, people will want to be part of it

Charities - good example as they create stories to connect with you
e.g. Water - they involve you in their story - show you how the water is drilled - numbers -= places - people involved - they ask you to be involved to track progress.

The Written Word 
Blogs- create podcasts of what it is like to be in a company
Build up a story behind the company - a sense of momentum
 e.g. Hiut.co.uk
Piolt Theatre blog

There will be people in the organisation to tell a story e.g. The Frog Blog at MOSI
There will be people outside the organisation to tell a story e.g. creativetourist.com - a visual map with audio sounds
Go find Stories - Creative Tourist project went to talk to curators people in venues etc 

Infographics
e.g. Water shows the equilvalent amount of money to how many kids it can save
Visual.ly - a website to help create a story through visuals

Photos

Photo snippets-  a collection of snapped photos to tell a story
Blogging a story through images  behind the scenes etc
e.g. The manchester #weekender

Video
e.g. Innocent's Annual General Meeting - showing you what happened in their AGM - known for their openess and transparenty - rather than tell a dry written story they show you what happened!
e.g. Inside Zappos video
Have resonance and get people to connect with you

Audio 
Audio can cox stoires out of people easier - it has an imediacy
Talk to people get stories out of them

e.g. Christian Pain who makes stories, coaxing stoires out of people for social media top tips:
Go with the Flow

Make mistakes

Don't try to sound smart
Ask questions that you generally want to know and are interested in what they have to say
Don't be afraid of pauses

Storify- narrate a story through the web using social media - pulls tweets flicker facebook etc all in one place and you can then embed this as a story elsewhere! - Help to avoid the web overload of information
