Hemisphere
The creative director, marketing director and senior designer from Hemisphere, Grant, Sue and Faye, came to present the work of their small but feisty design and marketing company and to put forward a student brief to us. I had met Hemisphere previously, when working with Designate for the client Arts About Manchester, the project for whom Hemisphere were doing the branding and Designate the design. Their company made up of 11 staff and situated in the Northern Quarter has most recently re-branded the GMPTE’s new trams and tram stops. Hemisphere went into great detail from start to finish of the project, covering the brief, the research and the inspiration behind the design. They also went into detail about the environmental factors behind the choice of colour and how the design transferred across different mediums and the strict branding guidelines that was created form it. Even the pitch to the client was talked about! Hemisphere believe that it is essential to have each and every design choice with solid reasoning behind it, so that it’s not only a thoroughly considered design, but you can back up your ideas when the client queries it. The brief for us to consider taking part in, was to create an illustration that would be used to promote the tram as an option of transport to varying target audiences. We were to focus the design on what lay at the end of a tram journey, rather than the journey itself. It was really good to see a professional project so in depth as you could really get a feel for the type and level of work that goes into a rebrand. Although I’m not really sure that branding work is my kind of design, I did like the thought process and decision making that went into the basis of it. I would enjoy the way you have to get down to the core of what you are trying to present and draw from that, a design solution- it’s all in the detail.
